Dr. Brian Schultz earned his PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology and his MD from the University of Washington. Dr. Schultz has served on the teaching and clinical faculties of the University of Hawai‘i and the University of Washington. His experience includes inpatient psychiatry, outpatient community clinics, cancer treatment centers, and psychiatric consultation in hospital medical settings. He has treated patients from college age through late life and, as the spouse of an active-duty military service member, understands many aspects of military family life.

She worked as an inpatient psychiatrist at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute and later at Eating Recovery Center and Pathlight Mood & Anxiety Center in Chicago and Denver, where she served as Medical Director. She has held faculty roles at Rush Medical College, the University of Utah, and the University of Colorado, and is a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist (CEDS).

With respect to medication management, I regularly help patients target symptoms such as sleep issues, nightmares, persistent worry, emotional dysregulation, frequent mood changes, impulsivity, and "toning down the nervous system," among others. I see young adults who are just starting their journey into adulthood, as well as adults who have been navigating life with challenges, which may include untreated, or poorly treated, mental health symptoms. Often, by the time I see a patient, they may have lost a significant amount of faith in their mental health doctors, and I am particularly attuned to helping individuals with this type of experience.

I am a graduate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY, and I completed my adult psychiatry residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. I was proud to have my first position post-residency at the River Oaks Hospital Trauma Unit in New Orleans, LA, where I treated patients with Complex PTSD and eating disorders. The Trauma Unit was one of a few of its kind nationally because it provided very specialized treatment that was affordable to many. I then went on to work at the New Orleans Veterans Affairs Hospital for the last five years in its ambulatory outpatient mental health clinic. Though my passion is Complex Trauma/PTSD, I also regularly saw veteran patients who have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and adjustment disorder. During my five years at the New Orleans VA, I received three special commendations from the director of the VA for feedback from my patients about my effective integrative approach to supportive psychotherapy and medication management.

During my residency, I led an interprofessional team to bring miniature therapy horses to the inpatient psychiatry unit, forging a relationship between the organization and all of Advocate Aurora Healthcare. I also partnered with a mental health counselor to create a virtual therapy program of resources, the Bridge Project, to close the gap between inpatient and outpatient care; it is now used throughout the Advocate Aurora network. I completed my psychiatry residency training at Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois. My passion for empowering patients with knowledge stems from my academic experience in psychiatry residency training. I served as an Associate Program Director of Loyola's Psychiatry residency training program for two years and now maintain an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Psychiatry role with Loyola. I continue to contribute to residency training, as well as mentorship of medical students and psychology externs. Over the years, I have received several awards that demonstrate my affinity for teaching, including the Educator of the Year Award in 2022 from the Loyola Psychiatry Residency Program.
