Biography

I am a board certified psychiatrist skilled in prescribing medications and working in psychotherapy. I combine a warm demeanor with excellent clinical skills, and have over 15 years' experience working with adult patients of all ages and many walks of life. I have special expertise combining medication and psychotherapy to help patients reduce symptoms and grow as individuals. My additional training and experience in psychological modes of treatment enhance the quality of care I provide to all my patients, to meet them where they are and prioritize their individual needs and goals. I also provide medication management-only treatments for people who aren't looking for psychotherapy or who already have therapists.

I completed my psychiatric residency at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. I also completed psychoanalytic training at the Columbia Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, and went on to teach classes at the Center, educating candidates about the nuances of combining psychotherapy with other treatment modalities. In addition to providing outpatient psychiatric treatment for over 10 years in private practice, I have worked extensively in psychiatric emergency settings, supervising residents as attending physician at Columbia-New York Presbyterian Hospital and Long Island Jewish Hospital psychiatric emergency rooms. I also have special expertise treating college-aged and young adult patients, having served as staff psychiatrist at Barnard College's Furman Counseling Center and worked with many students from Barnard and Columbia in my private practice.

I offer treatment for many psychiatric conditions, including but not limited to depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and personality disorders. I identify helping people ease and overcome their psychiatric conditions as my calling, and approach each patient with humility, diligence, and a collaborative spirit.

I am an accomplished and creative therapist with a reputation for achieving positive outcomes. I provide a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where clients can feel heard and understood. I collaborate with clients to reframe challenges and focus not on what is "wrong," but on building skills and achieving meaningful goals that enhance daily life and overall well-being. I begin by helping clients identify their goals and desired outcomes, then work together with them to create a clear path toward achieving those objectives. I honor each person's perspective as the true expert of their own life, ensuring that therapy is guided by their unique experiences, values, and needs.

I have experience working with adults, children, families, and couples across the lifespan, from early childhood through end of life. Licensed in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, I am trained in EMDR and trauma care, and I blend CBT, DBT, and other evidence-based approaches to support healing, strengthen relationships, and build resilience.

I approach treatment as a true collaboration. I partner with patients to clarify goals and create individualized treatment plans that reflect their priorities and values. I strive to be non-judgmental, direct, and honest in my style, building a therapeutic relationship that supports open communication and trust.

I have worked with people from many different walks of life in clinics, hospitals, and online, providing evidence-based treatments for a wide range of mental health conditions. My professional journey is unique: I began my career as a research chemist, later earned a Master's degree in psychology and worked with children, before pursuing my medical degree and completing a psychiatry residency.

I begin with a thorough evaluation to understand each patient's circumstances and challenges. From there, I work with patients to set and prioritize goals, review treatment options, and select a plan that feels both comfortable and practical. As treatment progresses, I regularly revisit and refine the plan, ensuring it remains effective and aligned with the patient's evolving needs.

Patients working with me can expect compassion, respect, and a collaborative partnership in their care.

I became a psychiatrist with one mission: to provide compassionate, high-quality mental health care accessible to anyone, anywhere. My approach emphasizes that patients are more than a diagnosis, focusing on the whole person, their story, struggles, and strengths. I partner with patients to create individualized therapeutic plans that may include medication management and holistic strategies. My goal is to promote mood stability, balance emotions, reduce anxiety, quiet overwhelming thoughts, resolve interpersonal conflicts, and strengthen resilience. I believe healing is best achieved through collaboration, open dialogue, and empowering patients to make informed choices about their care.

I am committed to meeting patients where they feel most comfortable, whether at home, work, or elsewhere. I offer the same compassion, attentiveness, and expertise as in-person care while removing barriers like travel, time constraints, and distance.

Originally from Pakistan, I pursued my undergraduate degree at Benedictine University in Illinois, medical school at Des Moines University in Iowa, and psychiatry residency at Trinity Health Livonia Hospital/Wayne State University in Michigan. I have experience in inpatient, outpatient, forensic, and community mental health settings.

I value open communication, transparency, and collaboration, and take a friendly, supportive approach to patient care. I practice evidence-based medicine with a thoughtful, minimalist approach to pharmacologic treatment, often favoring single agents that can address multiple concerns when clinically appropriate. My approach to care is holistic, integrating psychiatric diagnoses, comorbid conditions, social context, and lifestyle factors. Sessions include supportive psychotherapy, incorporating techniques from other modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and psychodynamic approaches as appropriate. Initial visits emphasize diagnostic clarity and collaborative goal-setting, while follow-up sessions focus on patient priorities, shared decision-making, and personalized strategies that support meaningful, sustainable progress. I have a particular interest in perinatal mental health.

I earned my medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School, where I worked with refugee populations and participated in global health initiatives. I completed my psychiatry residency at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, serving as inpatient chief resident. I have experience across the full continuum of psychiatric care, including higher levels of care, collaborative care, and outpatient settings.
